After a strong showing at Glen Helen Raceway, Darren “HotSauce” Hardesty Jr. was right back on top at Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, Wild West Motorsports Park in Sparks, NV. As the season comes down to the last rounds of racing, HotSauce has continued to put points in the bank towards a championship with solid performances on the track. He was third fastest in practice session one, and improved his position to second place during qualifying for round 11.
“We had a good run, I was in the zone,” said HotSauce, “After the inversion we started third. I got past George when he had a flat tire, then set my sites on Valentine for the lead. After I picked him off, I checked out from the field and went on to the win.”
Darren and his Bilstein, Off Road Warehouse, Mickey Thompson Tires, Bink Designs, Impact, Lucas Oil Products, Alumi Craft Race Cars, Black Rhino, RacerX and USA Wheels Pro Buggy team made a big impression on the fans. They sold a lot of t-shirts and signed countless autographs in Reno. HotSauce likes the track in Reno and it appears the fans like HotSauce. “I really like Reno,” said HotSauce, “There is a lot of speed involved. Even though the jumps aren’t huge, you are going pretty fast over them. While it’s super long, and super fast, at the same time, it’s still technical; it’s a lot of fun.”
HotSauce had more fun in store for the competition when he ran the second fastest time in qualifying. He had the best time until Bud Ward nipped him for the top spot by only five hundredths of a second. Running in third after the first lap, HotSauce was just making his run to the front when the shifter linkage broke, leaving him stuck in fourth gear. Unable to accelerate out of the corners, he held on as much as he could but was dropped back to sixth place at the finish.
We don’t know if the shift linkage malfunction was caused by the high speed pounding on the track or if Darren was making gear changes with too much authority. Regardless, it will be fixed when he lines up to race under the lights at Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park in Lake Elsinore, CA. on Sep. 23rd and 24th for rounds 13 and 14.
